EXPLORING GREYFRIARS KIRKYARD

Your Greyfriars Kirkyard tour doesn’t just focus on the lives and deaths of people; it explains some of the symbology on the oldest tombs in the graveyard.  You’ll even discover how most of the bodies are laid out, quite a chilling thought when you remember that they are there, only a few inches under your feet…
Memento Mori
Our research constantly brings new and exciting facts to our attention.  One of our most incredible ones was when we discovered that a name on the Martyr’s Monument was linked to a member of our family!  Your guide is as local as you can get - born two minutes walk away, University education in the Old Town and teaches in a school a few minutes away. He’s spent his entire life in Edinburgh and has that local knowledge which gives you a different experience to your visit.
A Family Link
The Tomb of ‘Bluidy Mackenzie’
The Mortsafe
We don’t get involved in discussing most of the ghost stories, these aren’t our thing, and they are covered well by other tour companies, but we DO talk about the ghost story linked to the mausoleum of Sir George Mackenzie.  So why do we make an exception with this ghost story?  Simply because it’s been such a classic Old Edinburgh ghost story for so long that its significance is historic.  You’ll discover why this was helpful to one young highwayman and what this tomb meant to the local school children…
One of the most spine-tingling stories is our description of the work of bodysnatchers.  We’ll fill you in with everything you’d need to know about bodysnatching, from what you’d need to bring to where to take the corpse to when you’d be best to go body snatching. We’ll also look at the most infamous ‘bodysnatchers’, Burke and Hare (two Irishmen who almost certainly never lifted a body from a freshly dug grave).

“This was one of the highlights of our recent trip to Edinburgh… A really entertaining and informative tour that helped us understand a lot more about Edinburgh and some of the people who once lived there. The stories were told with humour and with so much information, it was definitely great value for money. I would definitely recommend this tour, we had an excellent evening.”
