“Just got home from a 2 hr Walking Tour thanks to Historic Edinburgh Tours. (I won 2 Tickets) Robert was very informative a very proud Scot who loves what he does which is obvious when he tells you the stories about the characters and history of Edinburgh Would highly recommend this tour even if you are from Edinburgh. Check out their Facebook page.” Jane B TripAdvisor review - 22/3/2019
“It was brilliant! We explored Edinburgh's Old Town in a small group of three people together with Robert. Not feeling touristy at all! Robert had an answer to every question asked and an either cruel, funny or disgusting anecdote about every place we've visited. Our tour ended with a detailed explanation of the kilt and all its mysteries. Don't miss Robert's Tour if you come to Edinburgh.” Lena M TripAdvisor review - 2/2/2019
“During our honeymoon in Scotland, our travel agent booked us on Robert's walking tour of Old Edinburgh. After participating, I can't think of a better way to see the city and learn about it's rich history. Robert was funny, knowledgeable, used visuals, and clearly has a well-tailored tour that keeps people interested throughout the entire two hours. We much preferred our small group over the huge, impersonal, walking tours we saw along the way. I would highly recommend Robert's tour to anyone visiting Edinburgh, whether it's for the first time, or the tenth.” Clair V  TripAdvisor review - 15/10/2018
Regicide in Edinburgh! America has Dealy Plaza and the Texas School Book Depository -  buildings inextricably linked to the assassination of President Kennedy, Scotland has its own equivalent and, if the University buildings are open for us, you’ll get to explore the site of our nation’s most infamous assassination. We’ll recreate the night of Sunday 9 February 1567.  Our vivid description will help you imagine the mystery of the murder of the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. We’ll explain the political background, the relationship issues, the jealousies and the events which led up to the murder of King Henry.
SOME OLD EDINBURGH TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
THIS TOUR HAS BEEN RATED A ‘5-STAR’ TOUR ON TRIPADVISOR
See Edinburgh as it once was. There's something special about standing in a place where a King or a Queen once stood, and it's even more special to know what things happened there! Bringing the past to life is something we love doing.  This is something we excel at and it is often mentioned in our glowing Tripadvisor reviews. When you come to us, we'll use carefully selected archived images and vivid descriptions to help you imagine the Old Town as it once was. The stories we tell, the mental images we paint will, we are sure, let you see Edinburgh differently.  Wouldn't it be exciting to walk about the Old Town after your tour and see the buildings and streets as they are now…but know what they once looked like and how Edinburgh used to be? This tour has been designed to help you imagine exactly that!
Explore parts of the city which visitors often miss We’ve designed this tour to take you to some ‘off-the-beaten- path’ places.  This tour lets you experience a very different side of the Old Town.  Keeping to the quieter areas also helps us deliver our tour more effectively.   While we do visit the Royal Mile, we also visit some of Edinburgh’s historic places on the other side of the Cowgate Valley.  You’ll hear stories which many other tours just don’t cover.
Close encounters in Edinburgh Any Edinburgh guided tour has to take you to an old close.  These narrow alleyways were the very +veins of the Old Town, packed with people, businesses, and stories.  We take you to one and explain the living conditions in a typical Old Town close during the late eighteenth century, a time when Old Edinburgh was probably at it’s greatest.  Our stories will make you realise not only what Edinburgh folk went through, but how they used it to create positive social conditions.  By the end of our story, you’ll appreciate your home plumbing way more than you ever thought possible!
Greyfriars Kirk
Greyfriars Bobby - a world-famous story Your tour starts in Greyfriars Kirkyard, next to the grave of one of Edinburgh’s most famous ‘characters’…the little Skye Terrier Greyfriars Bobby. We’ll look at his famous story and some not-so-famous alternative theories of the life of this iconic wee dog.  Which story is the truest account of Bobby’s life?  That’s for you to ponder!
Life and Death of an  Edinburgh Playboy This guy is one of our favourite ‘Old Town’ characters! William Brodie was a skilled and respected cabinet maker and a deacon on the Town Council, but his love of the high life was his downfall.  By day he might have been a respectable businessman and council member, but by night he was a gambler, a womaniser and, laterly, a thief. You’ll discover the Edinburgh he’d have known, from his childhood home to the scene of his death.  We’ll share an eyewitness account of his last moments to help you ponder over one of the biggest Old Edinburgh mysteries…did Brodie cheat his own execution?

Deacon Brodie Darnley's death Riddle's Court
We adapt the route to suit Edinburgh can sometimes be incredibly busy, especially the section of the Royal Mile between the Tron Kirk and the Lawnmarket.  When the Edinburgh International Festival and Festival Fringe are on in August/September, we sometimes offer an alternative route down to the Canongate.  This allows us to run a tour which is safer, keeps everyone together and incorporates just as many interesting and picturesque locations.
