Our winter projector tours

On your tour, your guide will use an A3 book, with carefully selected images from our extensive archive. These let us show what Edinburgh once looked like. In the winter months we use a hand-held projector instead of the A3 books.

Visualising the past has just taken on a new dimension. Imagine standing in an Old Edinburgh location and seeing how it once looked, seeing it in a way that few of Edinburgh’s visitors will ever see. We can give you one of the very best visual experiences possible, our projector tours! We use visuals to help explain our stories. With bigger groups we use hand-held mini projectors to reveal the past, to enlighten and entertain you on your tour. We’ve recently started using an iPad to help show the past to our smaller groups. Read on to see how we use this technology in very different ways on our two Edinburgh guided tours. Our Greyfriars Kirkyard Projector/iPad Tour is a refinement of our summer ‘Resurrectionists Tour’. There we used A3 booklets to show you which characters were buried under some of the tombs and monuments; now we can take it a step further! Our projector tour lets us shine an image of the person buried here directly on the ground in which they lie or, on a nearby tomb. These special effects aren’t used as a gimmick. We use the projectors respectfully; Greyfriars is Church of Scotland ground and, importantly; these people are buried here! We use an iPad in a similar way when working with a smaller group. So if you want an informative tour, well researched and with innovative special effects, why not try us? Our Old Edinburgh Projector Tour is also an evolution of what we do on our summer ‘Walking in the Footsteps Tour’. That tour saw us use our A3 booklets to show you the characters who once walked Edinburgh’s streets as well as images which show what the area you were standing in once appeared. We use an iPad with our smaller groups. On this revised tour we can show you far more images of how the Old Town has changed, letting your imagination fully realise what Edinburgh once looked like. We’re pretty sure that this is the ultimate way to experience two Edinburgh, the modern city of today and the long lost one of history.
