“Do Not UNDERESTIMATE this FABULOUS tour! A MUST DO for Edinburgh! First of all regardless of what I write I will not be able to share how much my family enjoyed this tour. I truly wished I booked more time with Robert, he was the best! My family booked a private tour so our children would have time to focus and interact with Robert. We wanted them to learn about the unique history of Edinburgh and the entire experience was without parallel. Tour selection: There were several tours available, Robert was flexible and offered suggestions of what would fit our goals for the tour and keep our whole family engaged Safety/Security: Robert was perfect gentleman and while walking our family around Edinburgh he ensured our safety, he never crossed the road without waiting for signals or “rushed” through crowds, he placed my children’s safety first and it was noticeable (and greatly appreciated) Enthusiasm: Robert has a passion that is woven through his work, and both my family and I responded to his honest enthusiasm, I again cannot share how wonderful he is - he is the experience as much as the history he is sharing Details, Details, Details: from the visual aids to the LEGO men, Robert had it all! He had maps, activities, and museums to augment his stories, from the clues left by history we had a blast learning about Edinburgh Overall, I hung on every word Robert said. I will be contacting him again, he has been the best tour guide we have had in years.” Circlemajok TripAdvisor review - 31/5/2018

“Just brilliant! There are quite afew free group tours in Scotland - don't even think about them! I booked a private 3-hour tour with Robert - it was fantastic value for money and it really made my trip to Edinburgh even more special and memorable! Robert is a passionate expert, and delivered all these wonderful and fascinating stories about Scottish-Edinburgh history in such a mesmerising and humorous way. I wanted to really learn about the history of the city and be enthralled by its fascinating past, and Robert delivered and more. It was brilliant, Robert took me on a journey of multiple historic locations throughout the city and I learnt so much! Don't even bother with the free group tours - they all follow each other around the main city attractions whereas Robert knows exactly where to go and has the fascinating historic story behind each place and more. I booked Robert after reading the reviews here on TripAdvisor and am so glad I did. Don't even think about - just do it!” MissSerenity TripAdvisor review - 28/10/2016
“Knowledge and humor make an excellent combination I was in Edinburgh right before the Festival. It was crowded and there were numerous group tours. I went on a private tour with Robert and he brought the city to life.. I loved his old etchings with gave you insight to what places looked like in the past. He has a wonderful sense of humor and is super bright. One of the best times ever!! Book now, book often!!” Lesliebd9  TripAdvisor review - 5/8/2017
“I also asked Robert to put together a private tour to track down Edinburgh stories and buildings to go with what I know of my family history in the area. Not only did he take us on an epic walk that came with lots of details about Edinburgh then and now, but he came prepared with bus passes, maps of my family's addresses, and more to make the most of the time we had. Definitely above and beyond!” BC_Kathy TripAdvisor review - 10/5/2017
My husband and I booked a morning tour for our first full day in Edinburgh--getting out and walking seemed like a good thing to do after a very long travel day. In addition, however, we also wanted to learn more about the history of Edinburgh and the Royal Mile. We preferred a small tour and so decided to go with a private tour through Historic Edinburgh Tours. We found it well worth the money. Mr. Robert Howie, our guide, was pleasant, informative, interesting, knowledgeable and full of stories about past inhabitants of Edinburgh as well as of its various buildings. His love and enthusiasm for his city and its history was obvious and added to our enjoyment. He asked us what we wanted to see and adjusted the tour accordingly. We came prepared with good hiking shoes, wool socks, long underwear, wool hats and gloves, and hooded raincoats over fleece jackets and had no problem with the weather, even in December.” Ackersbell TripAdvisor review - 6/1/2017
