Well, we couldn’t leave him out! Greyfriars Kirkyard is famous for many reasons; some people say it’s the place where JK Rowling got some inspiration for some of her character’s names and possibly also for Hogwarts.  Some people go to visit the home of ‘Bluidy Mackenzie’s’ ghost, reputed to be one of the most haunted places in the British Isles. But for over a hundred years, the most visited grave in the Kirkyard is that of the loyal wee Skye Terrier, Greyfriars Bobby.  We’ll look at his story right at the start of your tour.  It IS a fascinating one (and it would be rude to miss out the Kirkyard’s most famous ‘resident’!)
SOME GREYFRIARS KIRKYARD TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
Come with us as we ‘resurrect’ some of  Old Edinburgh’s characters! This Greyfriars tour will reveal to you the stories of some of Scottish history’s most fascinating and significant characters. Our focus on history, rather than ghosts, is something that makes our Greyfriars tour different to most other tours which come here.   We believe that history can be just as intense, just as spine-tingling as stories of the paranormal. The body snatchers who almost certainly skulked around Greyfriars were also known as ‘Resurrection Men’ because they were known to resurrect the bodies of the dead. We won’t attempt that on your tour, but we will resurrect their stories instead. We will bring them back to life through our carefully researched and well delivered stories.  We’ll interweave their tales with the city in which they lived . This Greyfriars Kirkyard tour is a great way to learn about the life of Old Edinburgh’s people…as you visit the places where they lie buried today.
The Cheeky Caricaturist This caricaturist is one of our favourite ‘Old Edinburgh’ people.  He lived at a time when the Scottish Enlightenment was in full swing when some of the most significant Scottish thinkers were in Edinburgh, yet he chose to draw caricatures of some of the strangest and most entertaining people the capital had.  His stories give us a peek into life in the Old Town during it’s greatest period.
Memento Mori Your Greyfriars Kirkyard tour doesn’t just focus on the lives and deaths of people; it explains some of the symbology on the oldest tombs in the graveyard.  You’ll even discover how most of the bodies are laid out, quite a chilling thought when you remember that they are there, only a few inches under your feet…
The most infamous Greyfriars Kirkyard ghost story We don’t get involved in discussing most of the ghost stories, these aren’t our thing, and they are covered well by other tour companies, but we DO talk about the ghost story linked to the mausoleum of Sir George Mackenzie.  So why do we make an exception with this ghost story?  Simply because it’s been such a classic Old Edinburgh ghost story for so long that its significance is historic.  You’ll discover why this was helpful to one young highwayman and what this tomb meant to the local school children…

The Resurrectionists Resurrectionists, ‘bodysnatchers,' almost certainly stalked Greyfriars looking for freshly buried corpses which they could dig up and sell to Edinburgh’s anatomists.  Their story is one of the most mysterious and misunderstood stories from the early nineteenth century.  We’ll cover some of the supposed ways of lifting a corpse as well as stories of the most famous anatomists of the 1820s, an infamous period where some saw murder as a much easier alternative to using a wooden shovel to dig in the graveyard…

“Our tour with Robert was excellent, and we would highly recommend this informative and diverse tour. I thought I knew quite a bit of Scottish history, well now I know much more. The tour was fun, respectful, and very engaging, you should make time for this one.” Shannon B TripAdvisor review - 2/5/2019
“This was an excellent tour, especially due to the knowledge and presentation skills our our Tour guide, Robert. He has clearly spent a lot of time researching the many fascinating subjects that lie within this site. He approaches the tour with humor and enthusiasm while maintaining a proper degree of reverence for the location (this is a real graveyard, after all). My wife and I spent a week touring sites across the UK and Ireland, and I have been telling my friends and family that this tour was one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you!” Matthem C TripAdvisor review - 5/8/2018
“This tour was arranged for us by a friend and I would have to say it was the best small group tour we did in Scotland. Robert is very knowledgable and gave a very in depth tour of the history surrounding Greyfriars, at the same time making it interesting and enjoyable without the usual boring overload of facts that you tend to get on some Historic Tours. We have suggested our friend put this on her list of must do tours for all her aussie visitors.” Clair V  TripAdvisor review - 31/8/2018
