We’re all stuck inside. The weather is beautiful and I don’t know about you, but I would love to go outside and get active. I miss the Old Town. I miss the places I’d visit before and after my tours. I miss the excitement of showing off the old place to my guests and seeing it from their perspective. Well, I’ve not been idle, and I’m excited to share what I’ve been doing. I owned a small company called Actual Education. I planned, researched, photographed and produced ‘virtual tours’. These used archive images, 360-degree panoramic photos, and my voice-overs to bring Edinburgh’s history to people who wanted to visit the city’s streets…virtually. These virtual tours gave me my love of Edinburgh’s history. They became the starting point for the guided walks I lead now. The idea for all my walks have always been the same, and I replicate them here. I find a place where something historically fascinating happened; I get archive images of how the location used to look and then I use my story-telling abilities to mentally ‘transport’ my guests back in time from now to then. Now that we can’t get out to explore the Old Town, I’ve decided to resurrect the images I took and have added in more archive images than I use on my ‘real’ tours, video clips and our usual ‘real’ props to produce online, virtual versions of our walks. I’ll be live with my groups. I’m hoping we’ll get the same levels of audience participation and ‘banter’! Interactivity and engagement is something we all need just now, and I can’t wait to flex my tour guide muscles on these tours. On my ‘real’ tours, I ask my groups to imagine Edinburgh as it once looked and I help them by using images and telling stories. This virtual tour of Edinburgh is the same! You bring your imagination and enthusiasm for Edinburgh and Scotland’s history; I’ll do the rest. The (Virtual) Old Edinburgh walking tour will be available to book in early May.
